LEARNING OUTCOMES

Kindergarten is the gateway through which a child passes into school life. In kindergarten students develop life skills and learn about themselves as individuals within a group of peers.

Children in kindergarten quickly gain confidence in their ability to learn from a range of resources including the teacher, curriculum materials, the library and each other. They take pride in the new skills they acquire. The classroom, as a social and learning community, provides opportunities for students to work cooperatively with others, monitor their own behavior in a group and seek and accept adult help when needed.

Here are three learning outcomes that a Kindergartener should have learned from going to the Library on a consistent weekly basis:

  • Student will be able to correctly use question words: who, what, when, where, why and how.
  • Students will understand what a book spine is and why a shelf marker is necessary.
  • Students will use a shelf marker.

Test and Essay Items

I will test my learning outcomes by these three test:

1. By using the blackboard and/or overhead projector, ask each student to identify a question using the correct question word from multiple choices.
2. Ask each student to show me the book spine and tell me why they will use a shelf-marker.
3. Ask each student to demonstrate the use of a shelf marker.

I think that by allowing each student to identify, show, and demonstrate each learning outcome this will not only confirm knowledge of the outcome, but also confirm the ends of what they are being taught.
